The book begins in California, where a dog named Buck lives. He is kidnapped by the gardener and thrown into the baggage car of a train and then sold to dog traffickers. He promptly realizes what he must do if he wants to endure his new life in the difficult situations he is placed in. He knows that if he is going to live, he must undergo the call of his ancestors and act more like a wild dog.
